Birthday Blood Drive, in Memory of Maggie

  • Greenlawn Fire Department 23 Boulevard Avenue Greenlawn, NY, 11740 United States (map)

A day of love and giving back

Team MM 🙌 knocked it out of the park, with 83 pints of blood donated. 🤩 Thank you to friends, family, and our community who come out consistently to support. Together, we helped save 249 lives. It was a such a meaningful way to spend Maggie’s birthday with many personal stories and connections shared. Thank you to the Greenlawn FD for hosting the drive and the team at New York Blood Center for their incredible work and dedication. ✌️

Thank you all again for donating yesterday on what should have been Maggie’s 22nd birthday on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022. Cancer patients and other critically ill patients require multiple blood transfusions. It would be impossible to begin to count the number of transfusions Maggie received during her short illness. They kept her alive, at least for a little while.

New York Blood Center (NYBC) is one of the nation’s largest non-profit, community-based blood centers. NYBC has been providing blood, transfusion products and services to hospitals serving more than 22 million people in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

The event was be held at the Greenlawn Fire Department from 1-7pm at 23 Boulevard Avenue in Greenlawn, NY, down the block from where Maggie attended High School and lived.

The entire process takes less than an hour, and a single donation can be used to save multiple lives. Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are encouraged to attend, as their blood can be transfused into anyone in a trauma situation.

Nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. About one in seven hospital admissions requires a blood transfusion. With a limited shelf life, supplies must be continually replenished.
