How this one plays

The camera sits behind the car while roadside markers rush past quickly enough that the car feels faster than it is. This is an old trick of racing games and it still works. The sensation of speed comes far less from a number than from how many things cross your vision each second.

Understanding that improves your driving immediately, because you stop reacting to the blur and start focusing on the centre of the screen, which is the steadiest part of the picture. Whatever sits far off in the middle is what is about to arrive; the streaking edges have already gone by and carry no useful information.

The cost of a rushing picture is a shorter window in which to decide. Your brain registers an obstacle later than it would against a steadier image, so if your reactions feel inadequate, do not blame your hands first. It is the effect the artwork was built to produce.
