How this one plays

A modest crossword grid comes with a picture clue for every entry. The player drags letters into the squares until a word is complete, and the square changes colour the moment it is right. The vocabulary is short and drawn from everyday objects that a new reader will already know.

What separates it from a paper worksheet is the immediate response. A child does not wait for someone to mark the page; the answer arrives in that same second. Learning therefore happens at the moment of acting rather than half an hour later, when whatever they were thinking has already been forgotten.

If an adult is sitting alongside, ask for each finished word to be read aloud. Hearing the sound of a word next to seeing its spelling fixes it better than filling squares in silence, and it turns the whole thing into something done together rather than side by side.
